Overview:
The oral & maxillofacial Surgery department which was established in 1986 with the aim of providing quality care, is today a part of the extensive infrastructure of the Govt. Dental College& Hospital, Srinagar, and one among the best dental institutions /hospitals in the northern India. Spread over an area of 5000 sq. ft., the oral & maxillofacial Surgery department is equipped with state of the art facilities to house and treat 20 in-patients in two wards of the strength of 10 bed each equipped with modern gadegetry and hundreds of patients needing minor surgeries. The department  not only has attracted patients from kashmir but from jammu and ladakh as well and a few from other parts of the country. The department also has attracted eminent surgeons of repute from different parts of the country  to perform surgeries and conduct teaching sessions.

In addition the department is fully committed to patient care patients in both an ambulatory and inpatient setting, student and resident education, service to the University, the community, the  profession , scientific research, continuing education and publication for attracting and training the best and brightest residents selected by competent authority in the specialty. The department has assembled a faculty with diverse interests and expertise in the broad scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The department receives national referrals from practitioners and former patients.The department has active research projects as dissertations of the residents and faculty.

The department of oral & maxillofacial surgery is the standard bearer for dental student education, post-doctoral training, and high quality patient care. Clinical activities focus on the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The faculty in the department provides teaching in

·         Maxillo-Mandibular Prognathism And Retrognathism;

·         Orthopedic Treatment For Facial Bone Fracture, Maxilla, Mandible, Zygoma And Nasal Bone;

     Academic objectives:

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery focuses its teaching resources on undergraduate dental students and its 3-year resident training (MDS) program. The objectives of undergraduate student program are to teach management of medically compromised patients and routine dento-alveolar surgery. The aims of the resident and postgraduate program are to recruit and train oral and maxillofacial surgeons for private practice and academic careers by  exposing them to extensive clinical activities in the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery as mentioned and described above. Students gain clinical experience under full supervision of the faculty in all the mentioned surgeries.

Operation Theatres

  • Two existing state of the art theatres with latest gadgets were established in 2011.
  • The major theater caters the patients who need major surgery under the GA.
  • A separate well-equipped operation theatre, utilized for minor surgical procedures like implants and laser based procedures  is located just opposite the GA/ major theater complex.
  • A closed circuit T.V. system allows the procedures to be viewed in anstate of the art (one of the best in Kashmir) air-conditioned auditorium.
  • Besides a minor operation theater in the main department (block 1) caters all the patients needing minor surgeries  under local anesthesia
