OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT

The goal of the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology is to advance the field of oral pathology by turning out highly skilled doctors who will become proficient oral pathologists, competent researchers, and meticulous professionals.

The department of oral pathology focuses on the nature, cause, characteristics, effects and diagnosis of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. In addition to this the department offers services like cytology, microbiology, and histopathology as well as research initiatives.

The department is well equipped to train undergraduate and post graduate students. The curriculum is related to the overall development of the students in the subject of dental anatomy, oral histology and to identify the pathological and microbiological aspects of the oral diseases.

The department is well equipped with the best infrastructure like automatic tissue processor, semi automatic microtome, wax embedding module, biochemical auto analyser, adequate number of microscopes, microscopic slides, study models, charts, hard and soft tissue specimens for undergraduate and postgraduate training. The department also possesses fine equipment like research microscopes with polarizing, photo micrographic and head attachments required for postgraduate training and research purpose.

The Department of Oral Pathology, came into existence since the inception of this college and till date hundreds of students have passed this department who are presently working all over the world. The induction of post graduate program in 2020 was a landmark achievement that the department has attained. Many research papers have been published from this department on various aspects of oral diseases in both national and international journals.

Professor & Head

 

Prof (Dr)Suheel Hamid Latoo is working as head of department and professor in the department of oral pathology and microbiology. He has completed his graduation with gold medal from Government dental college and hospital, Srinagar and his specialization in oral pathology and microbiology from A.B Shetty dental college Mangalore in 2008. He has total of experience of more than 16 years and has several awards and achievements on his name.  He has several national and international publications on his name and has also presented several papers in conferences.

He is a man of great insight and futuristic vision and is instrumental in the attainment of glory and fame that the department now enjoys. Being a pioneer in department that has started meaningful research on the perennial problem of oral cancer and premalignancy, the research tempo and the academic atmosphere is still maintained over the years and for many more years to come.

Dr. Mohammad Shafi Dar

(MDS, Gold Medalist)

(Assistant Professor)

 

Dr Mohammad Shafi is Oral & Maxillofacial Pathologist. As a faculty in the department of Oral Pathology, he is actively involved in teaching and supervising undergraduates and postgraduates. Dr Shafi has done his graduation from Saraswati Dental college & Hospital in the year 2010 and Postgraduation from BBDCODS, Lucknow in the year 2014. He has more than 10 years of teaching experience. Dr Shafi has more than 45 national and international publications in his credit and authored 03 textbooks. Dr Shafi has presented numerous scientific presentations and is recipient of best paper presentation award in “Faculty category” in National IAOMP conference held in Amritsar in 2018. Dr Shafi’s field of interest is molecular basis of Oral Carcinogenesis in which he has done numerous research work.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Nitish Bhat

(MDS)

Lecturer (Academic Arrangement Basis)

 

Presently working as lecturer in the Department of Oral Pathology, GDC&H Srinagar, Dr Nitish Bhat has pursued his Graduation (BDS) and Postgraduation (MDS) from Himachal Institute of Dental Sciences, Poanta Sahib, Himachal Pradesh. He has also worked as registrar at Indira Gandhi Government Dental College & Hospital, Jammu and has total teaching experience of 04 years till date. He has many national and international publications in his credit and has authored few books. His fields of interest include oral cancers, odontogenic tumors & cysts and immunohistochemistry.

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Owais Gowhar

Dental Surgeon (MDS)

 

Dr Owais Gowhar has completed his MDS in 2015 from Kothiwal Dental College & Research Centre Moradabad and is presently posted in Govt. Dental College & Hospital Srinagar. As an Oral Pathologist he is dedicately involved in teaching and supervising BDS and MDS scholars. Dr Gowhar has numerous national and international publications in his credit. He has also authored few books. His field of interest are forensic odontology and Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMDs).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Nawal Khan

BDS, MDS

 

Dr Nawal Khan completed her BDS from Government Dental College and Hospital, Srinagar. She then did her MDS from Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Bengaluru, where she secured a position in the merit list of Top 10 outgoing PG scholars, RGUHS. Ms Khan has 25 research papers to her credit and presented her research at different National conferences and received BEST PAPER at 26th National Conference of Indian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologists, 2017. She is presently working as Registrar/Tutor in her parent college. Her field of interest are Forensic odontology and Odontogenic Tumors.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Minha Majeed Kak.

BDS, MDS.

 

Dr Minha Majeed Kak has done her BDS from Institute of Dental Sciences, Sehora Jammu (2015) and internship from Government Dental College and Hospital Srinagar (2016). She completed her MDS in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from Kothiwal Dental College and Hospital, Moradabad and was subject topper in Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University Bareilly, UP (2021). She joined as Registrar/ Tutor in the Department of Oral Pathology, Government Dental College and Hospital Srinagar in 2022 and is currently working as the same. Ms Kak has 06 research publications in her name and has presented her research work at numerous national, international conferences and conventions. Her field of interest and expertise is diagnosis in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

ACHIEVEMENTS

  1. Started Histopathology work in the year 2020.
  2. Till date more than 700  hisopathology cases have been diagnosed till 17/09/2024.
  3. Rarely encountered special cases include undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, metastatic adenocarcinoma, MNTI, Ewing’s sarcoma and many more.
  4. Dr. Minha Majid Kak (Tutor)received  “Best Paper presentation in faculty category at 20th National IOAMP PG Convention 2023, AIIMS New Delhi,
  5. Dr. Minha Majid Kak (Tutor) received  Outstanding Paper presentation in faculty category at 4th International Forensic Science Conference 2023,
  6. Dr. Minha Majid Kak (Tutor)secured  Third position at 19th National conference of the Indian Association of Forensic Odontology 2022 and 14th International Conference on Forensic science 2023
  7. Dr Rezhat Abass (post graduate student) secured 1st rank in final year MDS examination held by Kashmir University in the year 2023. Since then there has been continuous ranks in our department.

8.      Dr. Zeenat Shah (post graduate student) secured3rd position in scientificsession at 19th national conference of the Indian Association of Forensic Odontology organized by G pulla Reddy College and hospital, Kurnool Andhra Pradesh held on 10th& 11th September 2022

9.      Dr. Zeenat Shah (post graduate student) secured1st prize in paper presentation on international conference on craniofacial pathology & biology held on 7th& 8th October 2022 organised by Department of Oral Pathology& Oral  Biology, Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, Chennai

10.  Dr. Zeenat Shah (post graduate student) secured2nd prize as a Co-Author in review paper at XIX IOAMP National Virtual PG Convention 2021

11.  Dr Rezhat Abass (post graduate student) received Best scientific presentation titled ‘Approach to the diagnosis of Mucormycosis. A review” in XIX IOAMP National PG Convention Andhra Pradesh 2021.

12.  Dr Rezhat Abass (post graduate student) received Best scientific presentation titled “Interzygomatic and Intercanthal width- Gender determination methods in forensic dentistry. Indian Association of Forensic Odontology, Andhra Pradesh 2022.

13.  Dr Rezhat Abass (post graduate student) received Best scientific presentation titled “Evaluationof E-Cadherin in Oral Epithelial Dysplasia and in various grades of Oral Squamous cell Carcinoma” in29th IAOMP national conference

The Department of Oral Pathology is located on third floor of the main college/hospital building, the department is uniquely designed and consist of an Under graduate section, Postgraduate section, Hematology lab, Histopathology Lab, Bio chemistry Lab, Seminar room and Faculty rooms
